The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) with support from CDC implemented a home-based ART, prevention counseling and VCT program in Tororo district of Uganda. Lay staff provided weekly home delivery of ART and patient monitoring, as well as referral to clinic for medical care and psychosocial support. Participants received group prevention counseling as well as individual support, including development of sexual behavior plans aimed at supporting risk reduction. VCT was offered to all household members.

Program Goals:

  • Assess sexual risk taking behaviors among rural Ugandans participating in a home-based ART and prevention program.

Core Components:

  • Weekly home delivery of ART
  • Development of risk reduction plans
  • Provision of condoms
  • HIV counseling and testing for household members
  • Referral for clinical care and psychosocial support

Noteworthy Results:

  • After being on ART for six months, participants reported a 70% reduction in sexual risk taking behaviors.
  • The majority (85%) of risk taking behaviors took place between married individuals.
  • Viral load among those reporting risk taking behaviors reduced from 122,500 copies/ml to less than 50 copies/ml at follow-up.

Lessons Learned:

  • Integrated ART, Prevention, and VCT were associated with reduced risk taking behavior among people receiving home-based services.
